Effective Decision-Making

 

Length: 1.5 hours
 

Description: This is a workshop about the principles and practices that can provide a framework for using effective decision-making processes. The goal for every public official is to "make good decisions." What is a good decision? How do we make them? The workshop will be divided into five parts each focusing on key elements in the decision-making process.

      • Rules of Procedure
      • Role of the Presiding Officer
II. Style
 
      • The Image We Project When We Make Decisions
III. Content
 
      • What is in the Ordinance, Resolution and Law?
IV. Collecting / Processing Information
 
      • Doing Homework - Being Prepared Before Meetings
      • Thinking and Acting "Strategically"
      • Tactical Decisions and Strategic Implications
V. Communication During the Decision Making-Process
 
      • Prior to Deliberation - Define the Problem or Issue To Be Considered
      • During Deliberation - Focus on the Issue Not Upon Individuals
      • Before the Vote - Restate the Issue or Problem To Make Sure the Wording is Correct
      • After the Decision - Let Go of It and Move On to the Next Issue and Carry No 'Ill-Will"
